Celebrating the New Year is one of my more important holidays. I spend the entire week between Christmas and New Years preparing my home and cooking a feast for everyone I know. One of my beliefs is that you should begin the year like you want the rest of the year to go. I want to eat good food, have good conversation, and see the people I love. I want to have a clean home. I also start every year with a sunrise hike. My partner, friends, and I pick one of the shorter hikes in my area and meet up early to greet the sunrise on the new year.
In addition to the day of feast I throw every year, I try to pick one theme I want to carry into the new year, one aspect I want to focus on. In the past these themes have been one of my Core Values. In 2017, my theme was Simplicity. I dedicated that year to de-cluttering my home, my schedule, and my mind. For 2018, I focused on Discipline, because I had over committed myself and I needed to pull off all the events, tasks, and responsibilities that I dedicated myself too this last year. This year, 2019, I’m dedicating myself to something that I neglected last year, my relationships.
My New Year of Friends is going to carry the event I threw yesterday and continuing it throughout the year. I’m dedicating myself to setting up similar events, to inviting people to lunch and coffee I haven’t seen much, and to refocusing my efforts on my home life. All in all, this year is about strengthening relationships.
What is your theme for 2019? What are you focusing on in the New Year?
