Have you ever sat down and really looked at a tree?
Our brains are really efficient at categorizing and conceptualizing the things around us. This skill allows us to quickly sort them and ignore the things that are not “important”. This gives us the ability to function and not get overwhelmed by all the stimulation of our senses. It's a very useful skill, but, sometimes, we don't actually see anything.
Actually seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting or feeling the world around us is living. When we move too fast and conceptualize too much, we miss out on our actual lives.
So take a couple minutes and go look at a tree. Actually look at the patterns in the bark. Smell the resin. Feel the texture on your skin. Be truly alive and present for a moment. Isn't it marvelous how much detail there is in a simple tree?
